fobzy's little green recipes

fobzy's green recipes

Off I went with my green bag to stock up on some essentials. I am staying at a friends place at the moment before I leave for good old England. They are away until to-morrow and I am minding the pooch. He loves me already, probably because I feed him, he is always hanging around my legs in the kitchen.

My first port of call was the delicatessen, but, mark my words it was nowhere near as good as the one we saw in the video so I don't think it will be all that recession proof.

So really I just had to go into Woolworths but determined I was not going to take away one more bit of packaging than necessary, as per Louie's instructions.

I selected a very fine pure double virgin Olive Oil, just how that is achieved is a mystery and some brown vinegar.

Next was a nice dark green lettuce, tomatoes (loose of course), lebanese cucumber, a beetroot, onions, potatoes, carrots and spinach and frozen peas. Then came a nice (sshhhh) white round bread roll, a pineapple, bananas and some fresh yoghurt with berries to make do for the excrutiatingly overpriced blueberries at the moment and the very frousy looking strawberries.

I was feeling very pleased with myself, not a piece of plastic in sight, but then I stumbled, I wanted some best quality beef mince, organic of course, for flavour, beats all the others and the least wrapping I could find was at Woolworths so if anyone knows how I can get out of that one please advise.

As I passed by the deli on my way out I discovered they had barbecued chickens there at less cost than Woolworths but how one carries home a hot chicken without the plastic wrapping please tell me.

I had with me the ingredients for several meals, made by fobzy's own little hand.

I guess you're dying to know what I am going to do with the ingredients, it will be simple cooking for the busy but all too hungry family.

I'll mostly be cooking for one, but depending how many people you need to feed, you will need to increase the quantities.

I'm going to do the cook up and leave some food for my friends so they will have something to eat as soon as they hit home.

But, my first suggestion really is, find yourself a better deli than I did for an easy but nourishing take away meal enough to feed everyone. That's the simplest recipe I can come up with.

Recipe no 1. to be left in the frig for my starving friends.

Cut the chicken into appropriate sized pieces and put into a plastic container in the frig.

Next, make up a nice little salad, tear the dark green lettuce leaves, having first washed them, of course, and line a bowl with them.

Slice the tomatoes into cubes and wedges and add to the lettuce, then add sliced cucumber, after washing of course, slices of pineapple and put by in a separate container some sliced beetroot ( first having boiled it up to cook it ) in vinegar, after all, you do not want the beetroot staining the other ingredients a dark red and bright pink.

And, there you have it, the first meal, already prepared for your friends.

Oh, yes and I forgot to tell you, quantities of olive oil and vinegar to your taste, mixed together for a salad dressing, beats all that gooey mayonnaise stuff, not good for you at all.

Now, for recipe no. 2, but after all that cooking I'm getting a bit hungry and want to eat myself and I am going to have a home made hamburger.

So just put the other vegetables away and let your friends make up their own meals.

Now, under the grill lightly toast two halves of the bread roll, use canola margarine to bring down your cholesterol, then take a hamburger sized piece of minced steak and fashion out a rissole, needs no binding with egg or flour, being organic it sticks itself together quite nicely.

Grill the meat. Slice some lettuce leaves, fry some onions, take some of the pre-cooked beetroot and some slices of tomatoe and cucumber.

Now, put the grilled meat on the bun, on which you have already placed the lettuce, tomatoe, cucumber, beetroot and a slice of pineapple, add the onions, not burnt , I hope , on top and close with the other half of the bun. You can add a bit of tomatoe sauce if you like and sit down and tuck in.

Follow with the yoghurt with berries and sliced banana and you should now feel full.

So how did you like my little green recipes and a bit of green shopping, I do hope Louie approves or else she may not come and see me anymore.

Incidentally, I fed pooch before I started, it all made for a peaceful cooking environment.

Put the mince back in the frig for your friends to use as they wish.

Next time I post I'll be back in London, or down on the farm, and I know you'll all ( well, Louie, anyway and perhaps Amy) be missing me.

To Queen and Country....fobzy

nice work fobzy, yes meat with no wrapping is a tricky one, you need a friendly butcher happy to serve qty's for one. if you really want to be an angel you have to take your own re-usable plastic container with you to the butcher, otherwise the little plastic the butcher uses is better than the containers they have a t woolies...... they are very light so you won't even notice it in your little green bag as you leave the house

We'll make a greenie out of you yet Fobzy.

Enjoy your travels.
