Celebrating 100 Years of Alfa Romeo
August 20th 2010 08:25
Jon Shirley’s 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B is one of only 40 2.9-liter straight 8 cylinder cars made by Alfa between 1935 and 1939.
“Alfa Romeo has always possessed mystique,” says Al Cortes, 72, of El Segundo, Calif. He’s owned more than 20 Alfas. “Ferrari got most of his engineers from Alfa. Their passion was about engineering and design and what they were trying to achieve. It was all very romantic.”
Neal Kirkam, a judge at the prestigious Pebble Beach concours for 25 years, has owned and restored a string of cars, including the yellow Rolls Royce used in a 1964 Ingrid Bergman film, and a rare Maserati coupe he recently sold to bolster his retirement account. Mr. Kirkham, a startlingly youthful 84, has owned only two Alfas, but one of them — a 1961 Sprint Zagato coupe — is his favorite to drive. On a recent 4,000-mile trip to Arizona and back, “I got 30 miles per gallon at 90 miles an hour,” he boasted. “It’s the most fun of any car I’ve owned.”
These vintage buffs are really keen, nice work if you can get it, I'm trying but I've a long way to go but we did pick up the Jaguar for Mother, trust me, I'm a farmer
And here's another two pictures for you just to get your gastric juices flowing - drool on.
Hugh Taylor, of London, fires up his 1932 Alfa Romeo Tipo B on Thursday, the eve of the Concorso Italiano. The unrestored Tipo B was originally owned by Don Lee, the American broadcasting magnate, and competed four times at the Indianapolis 500.
Al Cortes of El Segundo, Calif., recreated a 1950s Alfa Romeo 6C Disco Volante, a car once driven by champion race car driver Juan Fangio.
