A great time to look at vintage - seeing it's snowing!
December 28th 2009 00:48
The celebrations are only just beginning to wind down now, and the staff are worn out, I bet they'll be laying a claim to expand their numbers from here on in and who would blame them.
But this is just a great time for me to be helping myself, hidden away here, to some time out, and indulge my love of vintage (and we're not talking wine here, oh, no, indeed, not after all those celebratory drinks and imbibing of the good stuff after I had delivered little Charlie's Christmas gift, for a child who already has everything, so this year I had to summon up all my creative juices and resist the temptation of adding to the little fellow's train set, all dressed up and nowhere to go, on that one.
At least for another couple of years they tell me.
But, for now, I'm drying out, can't have the Squire drunk although I'm told how often that is the 'status quo' at other establishments.
But just for our own style of charades, when I call vintage, what do you say?
And I bet none of you came up with the name Bugatti.
Well, you're all going to get a little belated Christmas treat when you see what I have come up with.
That first picture, there, is of the Bugatti super car of its day.
Chassis 57384 was the fifth Type 57 S constructed, with an original Atalante body and later fitted with a supercharger and upgraded to SC specification. Driven regularly, it's seen here at the Louis Vuiton Classic in Paris. (Photo: Wouter Melissen)
Nice, and sassy and classic and collectible, just watch that price go.
Now this one will grab you, all that dough!
This beautiful Type 57 SC was offered at no reserve in Gooding & Company's 2008 Pebble Beach Auction. With a portion of the proceeds going to charity, it sold for a startling $7,920,000. (Photo: Wouter Melissen)
Shown on the road during the 2009 Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance, Chassis 57523 won a Best of Class award at the Pebble Beach Concours, where Bugatti's 100th anniversary was celebrated. (Photo: Wouter Melissen)
And last but not least, After 52 years of storage in a British garage, Chassis 57502 was sold in "as-found" condition at Bonham's 2009 Retromobile auction for a remarkable $4.4 million. (Photo: Wouter Melissen)
